Do you need to answer citizenship test questions word-for-word?
No. USCIS officers accept any of the officially listed answers, and you don’t need to recite them word-for-word — the officer is listening for the correct fact, not a memorized script.
Many questions have multiple accepted answers (for example, several acceptable ways to describe the U.S. form of government); giving any one of them correctly is enough.
A few questions genuinely require an exact term (dates, specific numbers, or named documents), so those are worth memorizing precisely even though most others allow more flexibility.
If you’re ever unsure which of your test’s questions require an exact answer, working through the full question bank page by page shows the accepted answers for each one.
