Under current USCIS policy, each Form N-400 application gets one retest opportunity: a second interview scheduled 60 to 90 days after a failed first attempt.

Failing the same section again at that second interview results in denial of that N-400 — there is no third attempt on the same application.

An applicant can file a brand-new N-400 and restart the process, which resets the interview and retest cycle.

Because there’s only one retest, most applicants prepare by working through the full question bank rather than relying on a second chance.
