Is the U.S. citizenship test hard?
The civics test is designed to be passable with preparation: unlike many exams, USCIS publishes the entire question bank and every accepted answer in advance — there’s no hidden question pool.
The main difficulty most applicants report isn’t the content, it’s interview nerves and the English-language component (reading, writing, and speaking) asked alongside the civics questions.
Applicants who work through the full question bank at least once, then drill their weak questions, generally pass comfortably — the pass threshold is 12 of 20 (2025 test) or 6 of 10 (2008 test), well under 100%.
Age and residency-based exemptions (the 65/20, 55/15, and 50/20 provisions) also reduce the difficulty for long-term permanent residents.
